One important view in echocardiography is the parasternal long axis view, which provides a comprehensive look at the heart’s structures and function. The parasternal long axis view is obtained by placing the ultrasound probe along the left sternal border, just to the right of the sternum. The interventricular septum separates the two ventricles and can be visualized as a thin wall between them. The aortic valve is located at the base of the left ventricle, while the aortic root can be seen just above it.

Abnormalities such as wall motion abnormalities, valvular dysfunction, and structural defects can be identified in this view. For example, a dilated left ventricle may indicate heart failure, while a thickened interventricular septum may suggest hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
