New guidance from Diabetes Africa on foot care for people with dark skin – The Diabetes Times

Diabetes Africa has developed new advice for healthcare professionals to improve foot care for people with diabetes who have dark skin tones.

The handbook offers tips and advice to help clinicians identify and address subtle variations in symptoms and disease progression in diabetes-related foot care for those with dark skin.

The guidance, Diabetes footcare in dark skin tones, covers physiology, history-taking, assessment techniques, and investigative methods, and features clinical assessments and visual/audio guides.

It is the result of a collaboration across healthcare professional specialities, with input from people living with diabetes, and is supported by the Royal College of Podiatry.

Its authors include Dr Bernadette Adeyileka-Tracz, Executive Director of Diabetes Africa, UK, Dr Chris Manu, Consultant Diabetologist at King’s College Hospital NHS Trust Foundation, and Professor Zulfiqarali Abbas, Endocrinologist and President D-Foot International.
