A new podcast series looking to discuss all aspects of genetics in diabetes has recently been launched.
Professor Andrew Hattersley and Professor Maggie Shepherd have launched the audio series to educate people on the unusual genetic forms of diabetes.
Entitled ‘One in Six Billion’, the new podcast aims to share case studies of those affected by monogenic diabetes – a condition caused by a mutation in a single gene which is passed on from an affected parent to their child.
Emma Matthews kickstarted the series to talk about her son Jack who was diagnosed with diabetes when he was two weeks old. Jack’s life was transformed when a genetic cause was found for his diabetes.
Both from the University of Exeter, Professor Hattersley and Professor Shepherd were both involved in setting up the genetics of diabetes research and diagnostic service in the city. The service has now received samples from 111 different countries.
The podcast is now available here.
