This month, we asked Dr. Moshe Ornstein to share his insights in kidney cancer research and advocacy. He is a dedicated kidney cancer physician and researcher at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Ornstein completed his fellowship in Hematology & Oncology at the Cleveland Clinic and his medical education at Stony Brook University. His specialties include adrenal cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, and prostate cancer, among others. He focuses on understanding why some patients have kidney cancer that gets better with therapy and others have kidney cancer that’s more resistant. His work aims to uncover the immune and metabolic reasons behind this and identifying new pathways for therapeutic development for patients with kidney cancer.
Now, let’s dive into his insightful experiences and contributions in the field of kidney cancer research and advocacy.
KidneyCAN: A Catalyst for Change
Dr. Ornstein: As a kidney cancer physician and researcher, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a unique community created by KidneyCAN. This community, which includes patients with kidney cancer, their families, advocates, and the broader medical community, has been a source of inspiration and support for me in my work.
KidneyCAN has provided me with numerous opportunities to contribute to the fight against kidney cancer. I’ve served as an advocate, been a recipient of a Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP) grant, and have been part of the faculty at the Kidney Cancer Research Summit (KCRS).
Uncovering the Mysteries of Kidney Cancer
Dr. Ornstein: Our KCRP grant has allowed us to delve deeper into understanding why some patients respond better to therapy than others. We’re trying to uncover the immune and metabolic reasons behind this.
Additionally, we’re working on identifying new pathways for therapeutic development for our patients with kidney cancer.
Advocacy: A Personal and Professional Journey
Dr. Ornstein: I’ve been particularly impressed with KidneyCAN’s advocacy branch. Meeting with local and federal elected officials’ representatives has given me an opportunity to share how unique our kidney cancer community is and how critical it is for us to continue to push even harder to improve our treatment options and outcomes for patients.
The Power of Community
Dr. Ornstein: Between advocacy, research funding, and remarkable research meetings, KidneyCAN is a vital component of the care of our kidney cancer patients.
I urge others to get involved as well! We have come a long way in the care of patients with kidney cancer – but we still have a long way to go!
