Access Surgery

Passed by the NKF 12th July 2008, amended Jan 2020

The National Kidney Federation expects that all Vascular Access and PD catheter access surgery be undertaken early and in good time to achieve the best possible outcome. Delays and long waiting times for this surgery are not acceptable. The National Kidney Federation expects this surgery to be an NHS priority.

An Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is considered the best and most reliable form of access to the patients blood supply in haemodialysis.
